The Sunday Philosophy Club

August 17, 2009

My next Alexander McCall Smith book, The Sunday Philosophy Club, follows events in the life of Isabel Dalhousie, part-time moral philosopher, part time inheritor, and part-time amateur detective.

The story begins as Isabel witnesses a young man fall from the upper balcony at the end of a concert.  Isabel’s strong opinions on moral duty, or perhaps just her nosiness and excessive quantity of spare time, leads her to investigate what the police have determined to be an accident, but Isabel is convinced was cold blooded murder.

And yet, the book is less a plot-driven mystery than a sketch of semi-interesting characters and their interactions.  Isabel, with her busy-body tendencies, was a unique though somewhat annoying main character.  Cat, her niece, appears to be a naive, romantic young woman prone to poor judgments.  Grace, her housekeeper, seems to be a quick-to-judge, superstitious old woman.  And Jamie, Cat’s ex-boyfriend who Isabel dotes on for mixed reasons, is nothing short of chiseled-jaw, bassoon-playing perfection.

My expectations for this book were high.  I expected great characters, a captivating mystery, and (perhaps most importantly) clever humor like that I had found previously.  Yet, this series of five (so far) has potential that I hope will be reached in the next installment.
